Purpose: This annual event provides an outstanding program among community foundations, United Ways, humanities councils, and higher education/hospital foundations for professional training related to organization management, asset development, donor stewardship, operational best practices, and networking for the program staff, CEOS, Board members, and professional advisors. This program will help you grow your donor base and community development impact.

Tuesday, June 12th:
10:30 AM: Registration Opens – Come early to check out the new WVU Media Innovation Center and chat with your peers from across the state.
12:15 PM: Kick off Luncheon & Opening Keynote (To be Announced)
1:40 PM: Break – Network & caffeinate with your peers (Drinks and Snacks will be available)
2:00 PM – 4:30 PM: Separate Full Event Track: Building Rural Economic Development Philanthropy Capacity. This separate track will be presented by the Aspen Institute Community Strategies Group and LOCUS Impact Investing. A program for your organization to have a board member and staff leader attend. 2:00 PM – 3:15 PM: Breakout Workshops
- (A) Donor Stewardship for Long-Term Giving: Keeping your donors of all generations engaged, aware, and expanding their relationship is key to your organization’s mission. Join this panel of professionals who are using big and small ways to honor donors, keep them engaged, and creating long-term partnerships for the community’s benefit. Panelists include: Patty Showers Ryan, President of Your Community Foundation of North Central WV, Inc and Janette Gidley, Associate Vice President of Special Projects HSC Development and Senior Director of Development for WVU Medicine Children’s, and others.
- (B) “Making all the pieces of the puzzle fit” – Effective communications in today’s news environment requires diversity in platforms used, a plan, a schedule, recognition of multiple audiences and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to deliver impact. This workshop will focus on improving outcomes, not just communications. Presented by Jack Cipoletti, Corporate Partner Coordinator and Don Smith, Executive Director of the WV Press Association.

3:30 PM – 4:30 PM: Breakout Workshops
- (A) Community Leadership: Maximizing your Foundation or Organization as a community partner & catalyst – Are you looking for ways to partner with or become a better, more effective leader in your community? Then join a panel of your peers as they discuss the partnership programs they have enacted within their communities that have made a true difference. Take the lessons they have learned and the successes they have made back to your foundation or organization and make them your own. Panelists include: Dr. Michelle Foster, President & CEO of The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, Marian Clowes, Senior Program Officer of the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation & Regional Affiliates, and Debbie Bloomfield, Grants & Special Projects Administrator.
- (B) Donor Development for new giving, endowments, and estate gifts – Every organization that effectively engages donors does so with a strategy to ensure life-long giving and relationships. All generations need to be involved and give at unique levels; from crowd funding to endowment creation to planned gifts. Join Deborah Groves, Chief Advancement Officer for Carnegie Mellon University, as she shares 20+ years of donor development success and skills to apply in your big or small organization.
4:30 PM – 5:30 PM: Break – Formal program concludes for the day. Transportation is arranged to the return to the hotel to check-in before the group dinner.
6:00 PM: Dinner – Join your peers for an evening of networking and great dinner at Pies N Pints located just a few minutes drive from the Hotel. (Possible shuttles available)

8:30 AM: Breakfast begins – What are your burning topics or issues that you want to discuss with your peers? Join us for breakfast with your colleagues across the Appalachian Region for peer to peer learning and “Job Alike” table discussions. N

- (A) Social Media: Advancing your Outreach & Storytelling – Social media is ever changing, but remains one of the fastest and most cost effective ways to share your stories. This breakout session for our Communication and outreach focused attendees will help you to expand your presence on social media. This program is delivered in partnership with the WVU College of Media’s Dr. Geah Pressgrove sharing specific practices, strategies, and ideas to use in all size organizations.
- (B) Grantmaking with Small and Mighty Impacts – Join a panel of your peers as they discuss how they have made impacts within their community. Confirmed Panelists include Randy Maiers, President of the Community Foundation of St. Clair County, Michigan, Courtney Smith, Executive Director of the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation, and others.

1:15 PM – 2:30 PM: General Assembly Presentation: Navigating the Future with Tax Reform – Join legal and tax professionals including: David DeJarnett, JD and Drew Proudfoot, JD of Bowles Rice, Kathryn Davis Lamp, JD Vice President & General Counsel of the Foundation for the Tri-State, and other guests as they discuss the changes and impacts of the recent tax reform. Navigating the changes is critical to ensuring your organization continues your impact with donor development and making your community thrive.
