2021 Appalachian Community Philanthropy Institute: Agenda

This event is designed for Community Foundations, United Ways, hospital and university Foundations and more, to learn, connect and collaborate. We hope you will join us in both reflecting back on what the past year has taught us about our communities’ extraordinary resilience and in building the knowledge, skills, and connections to plan for a brighter future!

August 10th

1 p.m. – Registration opens

2:15 p.m. – Opening Keynote: Centering Trust Based Philanthropy after the Pandemic with Brenda Solorzano, President & CEO – Headwaters Health Foundation*. Brenda Solorzano will discuss her trust based philanthropy experience with a panel of local foundation leaders.

3:30 p.m.Skill Building Sessions

  • Skill Building Session A – Legal Session: “Donor Intent, Restricted Funds, and Best Practices for Creative Grantmaking in a Litigious World” with Zac Kester, JD of Charitable Allies (pending CLE approval)*
  • Skill Building Session B – Estate Planning: Nurturing Productive Conversations with Existing and Prospective Legacy Donors, with Susan Turnbull, Personal Legacy Advisors* (Approved for CPE Credit)

8:15 a.m.Breakfast & Briefing on Federal & State Policy Impacts for West Virginia: This breakfast session will be a briefing and discussion on key legislation impacting charitable giving, nonprofits, and foundations at the federal and state level. Some topics include:
– Universal Charitable Giving Deduction
– ARPA Federal Fund Deployment & Resources
– Workforce Development thru Post-Graduation Scholarships
