Phil Li will share the work of his foundation and partners to advance the trust-based philanthropy model to create equity especially as we respond and rebuild.

Join The Council on Foundation’s staff counsel Ben McDearmon, JD for this session that will explore the ways community foundations, private foundations and corporate funders can provide assistance to needy individuals in the wake of disasters – both natural and man-made – as well as to those suffering hardships from more personal circumstances. We will look at the IRS guidelines around disaster grantmaking and the framework applicable to public charities and private foundations. Ben will also discuss funds established to benefit employees of a particular company and the special rules that apply to such assistance.

The collaboration among Benedum Foundation’s Health Program Director Kim Barber Tieman, the WV Council of Churches, the Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts is to provide critical support to children in the foster care system. Day #4: Thursday, November 12th, 2020 – Leadership Development Forum:
As board members, CEOs/Executive Directors, Program Officers, Finance/Operations staff, committee members, etc., your roles are quite unique and cover many things. Join us for the leadership development series for you based upon your role and/or needs. We have partnered with national organizations: Peak Grantmaking, Grantmakers for Effective Organizations, Ethos Leadership, and West Virginia’s Brown Edwards CPAs for a focused 1 to 1.5 hour segment to connect you with your peers. This session delivers high-quality expertise and training in a reduced format so you can hop on and hop off. The individual 1 to 1.5 hour programs for this day include (the time of day for each session will be released October 1st):
- 9:00 to 10:30 AM – Program Officers, Grants/Distribution Committee Members, and Staff Session presented by PEAK Grantmaking: “Grantmaking has changed in the last six months… Will it stick?” – The ways in which philanthropy has interpreted the concepts of risk, trust, and equity continue to drive the processes and practices that dictate what is required in order to get money to grantees and communities. Yet, as grantmakers shift to rapid-response funding in the global pandemic and the outcry for social, racial, and economic justice, these processes and practices are now being called into question. This session will highlight all the ways in which the conventional wisdom of “how to make grants” is being upended – and the questions being raised about why, and how, philanthropy can meet the challenges of this moment, keep the practice changes that work, and evolve even further to realize its full potential. Presented by PEAK Grantmaking’s Melissa Sines, Programs & Knowledge Director.
- 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM – Board Member & Trustee Session presented by Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO): Board’s Adjusting & Adapting to new practices going forward in the Next Normal. In this session, we will highlight ways for board members of foundations, companies and other funders to determine new practices for effectiveness and equity in light of the pandemic to ensure strong relationships with partners (nonprofits and grantees) and what adjustments/new approaches should board members consider during these unique times and going forward. Presented by GEO’s Jocelyn McDaniel, Director of Programs
- 1:30 to 2:45 PM – Operations & Finance Staff Session presented by Brown Edwards CPAs: This uncharted year of changes and new challenges has required creative thinking and new practices for the operations and finance staff, committee members, and advisors for many foundations, companies, and nonprofits. Join experts from Brown Edward CPAs led by partner Valerie Ellis, CPA, Katie Cobbs, Manager, and Tyler Gall, CPA that will discuss best practices, strategies, and new avenues to manage your organization’s operations and finance virtually through the lessons learned and the new course forward for your organization/business’ operational/finance staff.
