Join Philanthropy WV and West Virginia Prevention Research Center for the Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) Training.  REM is a qualitative evaluation tool to assess direct and indirect impact of programs and initiatives. REM includes four crucial components – appreciative inquiry, a participatory approach, interactive group interviewing and reflection, and mind mapping.

This two-day training will provide participants with the necessary information and practice to successfully complete a Ripple Effects Mapping session. Training on facilitation, mind-mapping, the logistics of REM, and doing REM in WV will be provided along with strategic practice sessions for participants to apply their knew found knowledge of REM.

REM celebrates what community-based organizations (CBOs) are able to accomplish by encouraging participants to talk about their successes with each other and the facilitator. Then, the facilitator maps their progress on paper while a mind mapper maps their progress on a computer. This process provides the CBO with a physical manifestation of the “ripple effects” of their hard work and gives them the ability to stand back and recognize the difference they have made.

Furthermore, REM data can be thematically analyzed, just as all other qualitative data, to provide definitive insights into impact for funders. REM provides an alternative way to evaluate programming where the funders get the information that is most important to them in a less obtrusive and time-consuming way for CBOs than traditional evaluation data collection techniques.

TRAINER BIOS

KATHRYN BURNHAM, MA

Kathryn (Katie) Burnham is the lead evaluator for state partnerships for the West Virginia Prevention Research Center. Katie has extensive training, education, and experience in both qualitative and quantitative social science research and evaluation, data translation, and data visualization.

She works closely with the West Virginia Department of Health Division of Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention to serve as a subject matter expert in health equity, social science research, and evaluation. In this role, she has created, implemented, and led evaluations for several CDC-funded, multiyear grants to address chronic disease in West Virginia. She is a founding member of and serves as the facilitator for the West Virginia Health Equity Action Team (WVHEAT). As a part of this team, she is passionate about ensuring community-based organizations have the necessary resources and support to do public health work while also advocating for large systemic change as it relates to public health and health equity in West Virginia. 

Katie received her BA in sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, her MA in criminology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and currently is a doctoral candidate in sociology at West Virginia University. 

ERIN HUDNALL, MA

Erin Hudnall is the Lab Manager of the West Virginia Prevention Research Center’s Youth and Community Engagement Lab. In this role, she advocates for young people to be included in public health work in West Virginia. Erin is passionate about youth development and engagement. Her work in this area began at West Virginia Wesleyan College as an undergraduate where she created and led an after-school program for healthy lifestyle education. 

Erin is a doctoral candidate of sociology focused on rural community and organizational research at West Virginia University. Her perspective is informed by her Appalachian heritage and growing up in southern West Virginia. She is an applied, community-engaged researcher working to advance public sociology in West Virginia and within the discipline. Her dissertation research focuses on the processes of community development and place-making in rural contexts. Erin has subject matter expertise in qualitative research, youth development, rurality, organizational development, and community engagement.

ROB NICEWARNER, MA

Rob Nicewarner is the data manager at the West Virginia Prevention Research Center (WVPRC). In this role, he provides evaluation data support for various projects for the WVPRC. Currently, he assists with the Department of Health Office of Community Health Systems and Health Promotion’s grant work on its CDC-funded grant to address COVID-19 health disparities. Rob also assists the Division of Health Promotion and Chronic Disease and the Division of Tobacco Prevention with their various evaluation projects. 

Rob is excited to apply his knowledge of social science research methods and data analysis in an applied public health setting. He is eager to help improve West Virginia communities by supporting the Center’s goals of addressing health inequities among minority populations in the state. 

Rob earned his BA in criminology and a MA in sociology from West Virginia University. Rob has subject matter expertise in quantitative and qualitative social science research and rurality.
