Criminal Justice Reform for Grantmakers – The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation

January 21, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Join The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation (TGKVF) and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) for a special convening of grantmakers on Tuesday, January 21st. The focus is on supporting criminal justice reform efforts in West Virginia.

The program is from 12 to 5 PM at Marriott Town Center in Charleston, WV.

Today, 2.3 million people are incarcerated in our jails and prisons and over 70 million people have a criminal conviction on their permanent record making it difficult to find a job, secure housing or even vote in some states. Our system of mass incarceration means that nearly half of all children in the U.S. have a parent with a criminal record.

We do not believe that our criminal justice system is broken. However, we believe that the justice system must be redesigned, with community health and safety at its core, and with those directly impacted – presently and formerly incarcerated persons, crime survivors, law enforcement, families, and communities — at the helm of its transformation. It is critical that we work to redesign the justice system, otherwise, it will continue to create barriers to success for generations to come.

Our collective commitment is to learn from and be an excellent partner to, those closest to the work. CZI and TGKVF are not going to reform the justice system. But we hope to collaborate with and empower those who will.

This funders/grantmakers session has limited seating available so it is a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact Philanthropy WV’s Hilaria Swisher at hilaria@philanthropywv.org for details and to register.  Registrations close January 16, 2020!
