2017 Foundations On The Hill

March 20, 2017 @ 8:00 am - March 22, 2017 @ 5:00 pm

It is one of the most important years for both philanthropy and charitable giving on many fronts.  While there is a strong support for charitable giving, there are many complicated issues being discussed especially when government starts talking about increasing the standard deduction, lowering tax rates, etc.  This will be the most change we’ve seen for charitable giving and philanthropy in several decades.

Therefore, board members, staff, and CEOs of foundations and corporate giving programs need to join us for Foundations on the Hill to articulate the importance of thoughtful practices and policy proposals that advance the sector not diminish it.

Several key issues of concern to foundations and nonprofits includes:

  • Creating an overall cap on all deductions which would reduce charitable giving in our state
  • Having a floor so that only donations over a certain amount can be deducted thus reducing giving from middle and low-income families
  • A change to tripling the general deduction might eliminate the option of those from a middle and low income class from individual charitable giving at a higher level thus reducing private gifts in WV
  • The proposed changes to the Johnson Amendment that will weaken or repeal this longstanding protection in the federal tax code for 501(c)3 organizations are troubling.
