Education Affinity Group: Family Engagement

EAG Philanthropy WV

Family Engagement

July 6th 12:00PM to 2:00PM

The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation

Charleston, WV

The second meeting of the Education Affinity Group of Philanthropy WV was a focus on Family Engagement.  We will be joined by Sue Sergi, President of Charles and Mary Fayne Glotfelty Foundation.  Sue will discuss why parent engagement in education is relevant for community, private, and corporate foundations.  She will explain how foundations can encourage parent and community agencies to become involved in education.  We will also be joined by Stephen Smith, Director of the WV Healthy Kids and Families Coalition, a statewide anti-poverty organization that has helped win 21 policy campaigns and helped support 99 community-based health projects in the last 4 years.  Prior to coming to Healthy Kids, Stephen was the director of organizing for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and is the author of Stoking the Fire of Democracy: Our Generation’s Introduction to Grassroots Organizing.  A graduate of Harvard University and the London School of Economics, Stephen has worked with a wide range of communities – from running a for-profit bakery operated by people with disabilities to founding a youth advocacy organization that won victories on health care and financial aid.  Born in Charleston, Stephen and his family are thrilled to be back home in West Virginia.
