Pre-Conference Sessions

  • 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM: Foundant Technologies User Group:  You are invited to the Foundant Insider Scoop for a few hours of networking and learning.  Here you will receive a Foundant Company update and walk-through the most recent Grant Life-cycle Manager (GLM) release information.  We look forward to seeing you there!  This session being held in Mountain State Suite B will begin at 9:00 AM.  All attendees are welcome to attend, from current Foundant users to those that are interested in hearing more.   • 10:30 AM to 12 Noon: 4th: Quarterly Education Funders Affinity Group MeetingEducation & the Arts including special panelists:  Dr. Jim Denova, Vice President of the Benedum Foundation,  Carmelle Nickens, Founder & Manager of Rural Arts Collaborative (RAC), Jeffrey Carpenter, Artistic Director & Founder with Bricolage Theater, Sue Sergi, President of the Glotfelty Foundation, and Walter Tucker, Music Director of Mary C.   • 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM: Discovering Community Investment Opportunities with a panel of leaders discussing community investment opportunities for foundations leading/exploring impact investments and banks Community Reinvestment Act staff. Our panelists include:  Representatives from Senator Capito’s Office and Fred Williams, JD of Steptoe & Johnson discussing the New Opportunity Zones, Natural Capital Investment Fund discussing impact investments in partnership with foundations, and Jina Belcher of Strong Mountain Communities sharing their capital access for entrepreneur/small business development models.  RSVP by emailing: hilaria@philanthropywv.org
  • RCDI Communities Meeting to be held in Mountain State Suite A.  The meeting will begin at 10:30 AM and conclude at 12 Noon.

Speaker: Gladys Washington, Deputy Director with Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation
Patience, Please: How Philanthropic perseverance can foster social change and equity in the South.
A Southern regional funder dedicated to social and economic justice, the Babcock Foundation understands sustainable transformation doesn’t happen overnight. Washington shares how the Foundation’s long-term view of change demands sustained, general operating support and an application of a racial equity lens to everything from grantmaking to staff culture.

1:30 PM – 2:30 PM: Entry Points – Philanthropy’s Response to the Opioid Crisis, Plenary Panel Discussion
Panelists: Janine Breyel, Director of the Substance use in Pregnancy Initiatives for the WV Perinatal Partnership; J. Matt Boggs, Executive Director with Recovery Point WV, and Dr. Robert “Bob” Hansen, Director of Addiction Services with Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and Marshall Health.
Moderator: Kim Barber Tieman, Program Director with the Benedum Foundation. This session will showcase programs and organizations from early childhood to adulthood who are working on tackling our state and nation’s opioid crisis. Our thanks to Kim Barber Tieman for planning this dynamic session.

Freshen up before the Philanthropy in Action Tours, Network with your peers and visit with our VENDORS!

3:00 PM – 5:15 PM: Philanthropy in Action Tours of Charleston, WV
Join all conference attendees as we go out into the community to tour philanthropy in action with major transformations taking place in the region. There will be two separate visits, each will highlight the Economic Development work ongoing on Charleston’s West Side before heading on to the next stop.  Please pre-register for the tour you would like to attend.  

  • Tour A: Board the bus with your fellow attendees and travel to the MESH studio where you will hear from Liz Turner about the Makeshop work they are doing on the West Side and take a tour of the on going revitalization work in the area.  After that you will head to Recovery Point where you will have the opportunity to learn about the recovery services offered and to see first hand the life changing programs in action.
  • Tour B:  Boarding this bus will take to you West Side where you will hear from Tighe Bullock as he discusses the on going redevelopment work in the area.  Following the discussion you will board the bus again for the trip to the Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School where you will learn about their efforts to keep kids in school, engage them extra curricular programs, and creating a safe space for not only the students but their families as well.

Philanthropy WV hosts all conference attendees, speakers, sponsors, and friends for a night of entertainment and networking. We will celebrate the impact of our state’s philanthropic community and welcome special guest  William “Pat” Getty, outgoing President of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation  as he speaks on the impact of our state’s philanthropic community over the past 25 years.  Generously sponsored by Dominion Energy.

With Grant Power Comes Great Responsibility
There is no Bat-signal for grantmakers, therefore they must pay close attention to what and who they fund. Do your grantmaking practices have a super-secret identity? Grantmaking practices reveal the values that inform and guide your view of the world and your aspirations for funded partners and partnerships.  Bad practices drain resources from the organizations and causes we intend to help and prevent us from measuring our impact effectively. Session B: Red Flags on Nonprofit Financials – Join panelist Lawrence “Larry” Mangan,  CFO with Benedum Foundation, Michelle Greanias, Executive Director with PEAK Grantmaking, and Kiley Wagner, CPA, Manager with Arnett Carbis Toothman LLP as they focus on identifying red flags for foundations and corporate giving when reviewing grant applications and the applicants’ financials, annual audits, and form 990’s.  Many foundations and corporate giving programs do not have a CPA or finance person on board to analyze the finances of each grantee.  This session is beneficial to CEO’s, program staff, grant committee members, and board members.
